How to Upgrade Users from an Amazon Q Developer Pro Subscription to a Kiro Subscription

Overview

Kiro is AWS's agentic developer platform for the IDE and command line, and it is the path forward for teams currently on Amazon Q Developer. If you administer Amazon Q Developer Pro subscriptions, you can upgrade your users to a Kiro subscription directly in the AWS Management Console. This article walks through the console steps, with links to the official AWS and Kiro documentation.

The Kiro console shows subscriptions for both Kiro and Q Developer separately, and upgrades happen at the user level, so you have fine-grained control. You can migrate an entire profile, specific groups, or individual users as you see fit.

Good to know: The Kiro console is a rebrand of the Amazon Q Developer console with the same functionality, so existing Q Developer administrators already have the console context they need. See Upgrade to Kiro.

Scope of this article

This article focuses only on subscription migration: upgrading users from a Q Developer Pro subscription to a Kiro subscription in the AWS Management Console. Moving developers onto the Kiro client (Kiro IDE or Kiro CLI) is a separate topic and is not covered here. Before you begin (prerequisites)

To administer Kiro subscriptions you need:

1. An AWS account with access to the AWS Management Console.
2. Admin IAM permissions to access the Kiro console and subscribe/manage users. See How Kiro works with IAM.
3. An identity provider for your users/groups. Options include IAM Identity Center, Okta, or Microsoft Entra ID. Reference: Subscribing your team to Kiro: Prerequisites

Upgrade subscriptions in the AWS Management Console

1. Sign in to the AWS Management Console and switch to the Kiro console. If you don't see it, confirm you are in the correct AWS Region.
2. Open the Q Developer subscriptions view (subscriptions for Q Developer and Kiro are listed separately).
3. Select the groups or users you want to upgrade.
4. Choose to upgrade to a Kiro subscription and select the target tier. For the current tiers, credit allocations, and prices, see Kiro pricing.
5. Confirm to complete the upgrade.

The selected groups and users move from the subscription tab under Q Developer to the subscription tab under Kiro. You can migrate across an entire profile from a member account, or across groups and individual users from the same profile.

Changing a tier later

To change a user's plan after they are on Kiro:

1. In the Kiro console, go to the Users & Groups page and choose the Users or Groups tab.
2. Choose the user or group whose subscription you want to change.
3. Choose Change plan, select the new plan, and choose Continue.
