This article serves as an announcement for RDS for MariaDB major version 10.4 end of standard support.

MariaDB community deprecated MariaDB major version 10.4 on June 18, 2024 [1]. Consequently, it is no longer receiving any security patches or bug fixes. Therefore, Amazon RDS for MariaDB 10.4 will reach end of standard support on February 28, 2025.

Starting January 28, 2025, 12:01 AM UTC, you will not be able to create new RDS instances with MariaDB major version 10.4 from either the AWS Console or the CLI. RDS will upgrade your MariaDB 10.4 databases to MariaDB 10.11.8 or higher during a scheduled maintenance window between February 28, 2025 12:01 UTC and March 28, 2025 12:01 UTC. Starting on March 28, 2025 12:01 AM UTC, any MariaDB 10.4 databases that remain will be upgraded to version 10.11.8 or higher regardless of instances’ scheduled maintenance window.

We recommend that you proactively upgrade your databases to version 10.11.8 or higher before February 28, 2025. Amazon RDS for MariaDB 10.11 includes performance improvements that enable up to 40% higher transaction throughput than prior versions. You can deploy RDS for MariaDB 10.11 on RDS Optimized Read and Optimized Write enabled instance classes for additional performance gains. MariaDB 10.11 major version also includes improvements to authentication, information schema, system versioning, and the InnoDB storage engine made by the MariaDB community [2].

This is a mandatory engine version upgrade and it requires downtime. To learn more about upgrading MariaDB major versions in RDS, review the 'Upgrading Database Versions' section in the Amazon RDS User Guide [3]. To minimize the downtime during the upgrade, you can use the fully managed Amazon RDS Blue/Green Deployments Service [4] to switch to an upgraded database.

To proactively plan for future Amazon RDS for MariaDB deprecation of major version 10.5 and higher, you can refer to the release calendar in the Amazon RDS user guide [5].
