Cloud-Native Patch Management Tool (AWS Systems Manager): Pros:

  • Native Integration: AWS Systems Manager, a cloud-native patch management tool, integrates directly with your AWS infrastructure, providing deep visibility and control over your resources.
  • Simplified Management: Using a cloud-native tool eliminates the need for separate configurations, licenses, and updates associated with a third-party tool, streamlining your patch management process.
  • Cost Efficiency: AWS Systems Manager is part of your AWS subscription, meaning there are no additional licensing costs. You only pay for the AWS resources utilized during patch management activities.

Cons:

  • Feature Limitations: Cloud-native patch management tools may not offer the same level of customization and advanced features as some third-party tools. Evaluate whether the available features meet your specific requirements.
  • Learning Curve: If you are accustomed to a specific third-party tool, transitioning to a cloud-native solution like AWS Systems Manager may require some learning and adjustment.

Third-Party Patch Management Tool: Pros:

Familiarity: If you have been using a third-party tool successfully on your non-native cloud servers, sticking with it can provide consistency and familiarity during the migration process. Advanced Features: Third-party tools often offer advanced features and customization options that may not be available in cloud-native tools. These features can provide granular control and meet specific requirements of your organization. Cross-Cloud Compatibility: If you are using multiple cloud providers or planning a multi-cloud strategy, a third-party tool might offer better compatibility across different cloud environments. Cons:

Additional Complexity: Integrating and managing a third-party tool alongside your AWS infrastructure can introduce additional complexity, such as managing separate licenses, configurations, and updates. Increased Cost: Depending on the pricing model of the third-party tool, it may lead to additional costs on top of your AWS expenses, including licensing fees and support contracts. Limited Integration: Third-party tools might not integrate seamlessly with native AWS services, resulting in reduced visibility and control over your cloud environment.
