AWS Amplify failing to activate custom domain

Yesterday I deleted the custom domain from the app. I had to change the attached repository and recreated the app in Amplify. All works with amplify's own url. But after I tried to create the same custom domain, it fails to activate. SSL Creation and SSL Configuration steps pass, but the last step fails. The error message complains there is something still "conflicting" in cloudfront, but these Amplify distributions are not shown, so I can't verify that. I have checked the DNS and Route53 are ok and the same setup worked before.

Is my only option just wait and try again when the cloudfront releases the domain or is there something else I can do. I have already waited 12 hours and still same status.
