Bug Report: SVV_EXTERNAL_TABLE view on Redshift Serverless doesn't return results

Question

We have a Redshift Cluster with DC2 nodes and a Redshift Serveless service running on same AWS account in us-east-1 region.
When trying to query the SVV_EXTERNAL_TABLE view on the Redshift cluster, we are getting the complete information about the external tables that are created by the cluster or are accessible from the cluster, but, when trying to do the same thing on Redshift serverless, we are not able to get any results suggesting that no external tables are accessible from the Redshift serveless service. We can still query the external tables from the Redshift serverless service. An example query to access the external table data on Redshift Serverless:
```
select * from awsdatacatalog.profilesawsglue.temp_tbl_a limit 1;
```

Hello,

I quickly tested and was able to query below system tables on Redshift cluster as well as Redshift serverless.

- select * from SVV_EXTERNAL_TABLES;
- select * from SVV_EXTERNAL_SCHEMAS;

SVV_EXTERNAL_TABLES & SVV_EXTERNAL_SCHEMAS system tables are visible to all users. Superusers can see all rows.
However, regular users should be able to see only their own data as mentioned in [1],[2].

That being said, if there is anything unusual observed from the mentioned above I would request you to please raise a support case with AWS for further investigation. If a support case has already been created please be assured that we will get back to you and assist you in the best way possible.

Answer

Please use  **sys_external_query_detail**  in Redshift serverless to get details about External tables.

Please note that not all metadata provisioned tables are available on Redshift Serverless. Following link lists the equivalent metadata monitoring views that are available on Redshift Serverless
