AWS DMS Task Resumption Query

0

Hey AWS Community!

I've got a question regarding AWS Database Migration Service (DMS).I recently upgraded my source database, and after a while, I noticed that the DMS task associated with it had failed (binlog_format) .After a fix, I found myself unable to resume the task; it seems like the only option is to restart from the beginning.I'm wondering about the duration within which I can resume it without having to start from scratch.

Hello,

I understand that you encountered an issue on your task, which you managed to fix. However, after fixing you are unable to resume the task and you would like to know duration within which I can resume it without having to start from scratch.

With AWS DMS, when the task fails, the log file (binary log) DMS read is usually retained which is used when the task resumes to continue with the migration. However, if the binary log is no longer available on the source database instance, you will not be able to resume the task.

The duration in which you can resume the task without restarting is determined by the value set for the binary log retention period [1]. The the binlog retention period ensures that the logs are available for longer duration on the instance. You may configure the binary log retention period using the following command:

CALL mysql.rds_set_configuration(name,value);

You may refer to documentation for more information [1].

I hope the above info is helpful
