How to link a Lightsail DNS to a domain name I bought on Route 53

1

Hi,

I am unable to setup my DNS settings after buying a domain name on Route 53. When I access my website it says: mywebsite.com’s server DNS address could not be found.

I found this page that explain how to setup it: https://lightsail.aws.amazon.com/ls/docs/how-to/article/lightsail-how-to-create-dns-entry

I did all it says. At the end of the article it says:
To change where your domain points

  1. Open the Amazon Route 53 console.
  2. Follow the steps in this tutorial: Configuring Amazon Route 53 as Your DNS Service (http://docs.aws.amazon.com/Route53/latest/DeveloperGuide/creating-migrating.html).

But when I click on the article, it doesn't have any "How to's" or something that explain what I need to do exactly in Route 53..

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you

Hi,

Thanks for reaching out. Here're a couple of steps to help you out:

First, set up a DNS domain in Lightsail as outlined here:
https://lightsail.aws.amazon.com/ls/docs/how-to/article/lightsail-how-to-create-dns-entry

Make a not of the nameservers that Lightsail gives you at the bottom of the page once you have created your domain.

You can then navigate to your Route 53 console home and click on "Domains" in the upper right part of the screen, you will get to a list of your registered domains. Click on the one you are interested in pointing to your Lightsail instance, and then click on "Add or edit name servers". Add the names you noted in step 1. It may take some time for the update to propagate and everything to work together.

Let us know once you've got this together, and thanks for using Lightsail!

Thanks!
George

Hi,

This is useful information. I did the chagne and will wait around 24 hours if it works.

I have a question, what is the difference then in Route 53 in the secton Hosted Zones? There is also here some default name servers listed and I don't understant if I need to modify them or not also.

Thank you for your help.

Route 53 Hosted Zones are the actual DNS service that Amazon provides. Lightsail provides a friendly wrapper to this sort of service. Route 53 is much more complex, but has a lot more useful capabilities than Lightsail DNS. If you're unsure, you probably don't need Route 53 DNS.

Note that confusingly, Route 53 is actually three services -- Hosted Zones (DNS), Domain Registration, and metrics/alarms (CloudWatch). We are only referring to the first two.

Hi Etdashou. I'm having the same problem. I also registered a domain with Route 53, followed instructions till the point where they stop short. Left hanging in the air did a search and found your request for help. I then followed the new instructions, but It doesn't work. Hard to believe that AWS wouldn't be more careful with this. Did you get your website to work? If so, please let me know how you did it, or if anyone can help, I will really appreciate. Thanks.

Just to close this off, I was a little confused about how this works with Lightsail also. If you click on the help section on the left of the DNS Zone page, you'll get this set of instructions:

https://lightsail.aws.amazon.com/ls/docs/how-to/article/lightsail-how-to-create-dns-entry

The key section is Step 2, where you add the destination IP to the record. Do that per instructions linked above and your new domain should start working in a few minutes.

HTH,

Brian

Sorry, but what do you mean ""Add or edit name servers". Add the names you noted in step 1. It may take some time for the update to propagate and everything to work together."?

.... There is only room for 1 i have created 2 sup-domains, also step one is your root DNS why would i put that in there?
