Questions regarding Availability Zones

0

Hi there,

I'm a consultant and my team is currently working on business expansion project for our client. And there're few things our team would like to find out regarding AWS. Below is the background information!

Our client is a data platform company based in South Korea and they are planning to expand their business overseas. To be specific, their service is based on AWS solution, and it supports hyper-personalized marketing based on customer data which their potential partners hold. Since there are some countries where they do not seem to support AWS services there are few facts that we'd like to check.

And below are the questions!

I. Common

1.1. What is the difference between Local Zones vs. Regions and Availability Zones(AZ)? 1.1.1. If a country only applies to Local Zones (and not to AZ), what kind of restrictions are there to utilize our service?

1.2. When considering a country to define as AZ, what are the requirements and logics? 1.2.1. Are there any legal or regulatory issues to consider when considering a country to be included in AZ?

II. Region Specific

*For those countries where they do not belong AZ (e.g., New Zealand, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Taiwan)… *

2.1. Is it possible to utilize AWS services with a server in another country at above countries? 2.1.1. If not possible, why is that? Is that because of regulation? What regulation is that?

2.2. Is it necessary to get an approval from Availability Zones to use AWS services? 2.2.1. If yes, could you please specify the name of countries that above countries have an access of its server?

2.3. Among above countries, which country is likely to become one of AZ in the short term?

Looking forward to hearing from you soon! And thank you in advance.

Best regards, Hazel

Hello.

1.1. What is the difference between Local Zones vs. Regions and Availability Zones(AZ)?

A region is a unit that divides an area into physical locations.
Availability Zones are regional units that are further divided from regions.
Local Zones are designed to bring the core services needed by latency-sensitive parts of your workload closer to your end users.

1.1.1. If a country only applies to Local Zones (and not to AZ), what kind of restrictions are there to utilize our service?

There are restrictions on the services that can be used in the local zone.
The available services are listed in the document below.

1.2.1. Are there any legal or regulatory issues to consider when considering a country to be included in AZ?

All regions can be used by users from any country.

  • Myanmar does not have a region, so you will need to use a region from another country.

  • Thank you for your kind answer. There's re some questiona;

    1. Then, in case of Myanmar(this country is not one of the Availability Zones neither Local Zones) , is it possible to utilize AWS based solution without using server from other countries?

    2. Is it possible to upload data to server in Myanmar? What kind of data could be uploaded? (e.g., personal data, transaction data etc)

  • What kind of countries is Myanmar able to use to upload data to the cloud?

I added another question that: Is it possible to upload data to server in Myanmar? What kind of data could be uploaded? (e.g., personal data, transaction data etc)

  • AWS does not have a region in Myanmar, so data will be stored on servers in countries other than Myanmar. You must decide how to manage your data. This means that you should consult with your users to determine which country regions are available, including data types. https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/using-regions-availability-zones.html

  • What factors could be considered when determining which country regions to store data?
