When I try to modify my Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) volume, I get the error "The service is unavailable. Please try again shortly."
Resolution
You receive the "The service is unavailable. Please try again shortly." error because an operational activity is happening on the systems that host your volume. The operational activity doesn't affect your volume performance or availability. The EBS volume can continue to serve read or write requests during the operational activity. However, you can't modify your volume.
To view notifications about the AWS services that you use, log in to the AWS Health Dashboard. You receive a notification on the dashboard when an operation for an AWS service begins and another notification after the operation is completed. Continue to monitor the dashboard until you receive the notification that the operation is completed. Then, you can begin to modify your volume.
If you can't wait until the operation is completed, then create a new volume and restore the data from the snapshot of your existing volume. For more information, see Replace an Amazon EBS volume using a snapshot. If you don't have a snapshot of your volume, then see Create Amazon EBS snapshots.
