### Prerequisites

Before you migrate your Amazon EC2 instance, complete the following steps:

*   Make sure that you have a backup of your instance. Either [create a snapshot](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/WindowsGuide/ebs-creating-snapshot.html#ebs-create-snapshot) or [create a Windows AMI](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/WindowsGuide/Creating_EBSbacked_WinAMI.html#how-to-create-windows-ebs-ami) of your instance.
*   Make sure that you migrate your instance during a maintenance window. Instance migration requires stopping and starting of an instance.
*   Review other prerequisites and [considerations for compatible instance types](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/WindowsGuide/ec2-instance-resize.html#resize-ebs-backed-instance-considerations).
