Error message: Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender

0

Hi, I am using Amazon WorkMail through it's webmail platform at https://webmail.mail.eu-west-1.awsapps.com/workmail

I can send OK using the primary email address on the WorkMail user account as the from: address, and I can send ok using most of the other email aliases, but there is one email alias that I cannot send from, or at least when I try I get an immediate bounce email with subject "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender", and the email is not delivered.

For the email alias that doesn't work as a from: address, the domain part seems OK because I can send from name1@example.com ok, whereas as one particular email address name2@example.com causes the error.

The bounce message more fully is.. from: mailer-daemon@<my primary domain> subject: Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender

Unfortunately, the system was unable to deliver your mail. The error given was:

2023-06-29 17:13:17 : An error occurred trying to send your message. Error code: 0X80040201

You may need to contact your e-mail administrator to solve this problem.

I'd be grateful to know how I can resolve this error while still being able to send email from my chosen email alias.

Thanks in advance..

There could be a few reasons this happens:

  1. Issue with autocomplete on specific recipient. If you are trying to send to a specific contact, delete the contact itself, and do it manually. Also have you tried to send to other email domains from the email address with the issue?
  2. Also related, if the alias that you are sending from is in your address book, you have to delete that record.

Those generally are the most common. If not I would definitely engage AWS Support.

  • That was an excellent answer, thanks.
The issue wasn't to do with your #1, autocomplete, since I was typing the addresses in, and I had already tried sending to addresses on multiple different domains external to AWS. However, your #2 seemed to correctly identify my issue. I did have an address book entry with the alias' email address. I deleted that address book entry and thereafter I can send email from my previously problematic alias.

Thank you very much for your answer.
