Route 53 registrar sends broken email verification links

1

Route 53 registrar sends broken email verification links. I have tried different browser, devices, networks, and emails. I ALWAYS recieve the link but AWS continues to say "reachability pending". Unsure on what to do and ticket has been open but unassigned for 7 days. Route 53 already removed the ability to access one of my domains via a browser for "reachability pending" and it will happen to this one too soon.

  • I am having this issue as well. How did you resolve. I've tried every single browser, with cache clearing, ensuring the correct email link, everything support is saying to do but I still get a broken link as well.

Hi laebel — a couple of things that should help, and some reassurance on the support side.

First: I believe you don't need a paid plan for this at this moment. Route 53 domain-registration problems (registrant email verification, "reachability pending," ClientHold suspension) are handled as a domain/account issue, not technical support — so the free "general" case you've already opened is the correct and only channel you need. The AWS Support domains team can manually push the registrant verification through. So pressing on your existing case is valid; you don't have to upgrade.

Most likely cause of the "always broken" link: each time you resend the confirmation email, the links in all previous emails are invalidated — only the link in the single most recent email still works. If you've resent multiple times to multiple addresses, every older link is now dead, which would look exactly like "the link is always broken." Try this once, cleanly:

  1. Resend the verification email one time from the Route 53 console (Registered domains → select the domain → resend the registrant/confirmation email).
  2. Open only that newest email, and before clicking, switch the email to plain-text / "show original / view source" so the URL isn't shortened or wrapped by the mail client.
  3. Copy the entire URL (these links are very long and often line-wrap across 2–3 lines — a partial copy is the #1 reason they fail) and paste it as one continuous line into the address bar.

If it still fails: in the console, edit the domain's registrant contact and re-save the email address (even the same one). Updating the contact re-triggers a fresh verification flow, which sometimes clears a stuck "reachability pending" state.

On your open case (since that's your channel): reply on the same case rather than opening new ones — duplicates tend to get merged or closed without action. In your reply, state clearly: this is ICANN registrant email reachability verification, the link is non-functional across all clients, one domain is already suspended (ClientHold) and another is about to be, and include the domain name(s). That framing routes it to the Route 53 domains team faster.

For reference: How do I resolve verification issues for domains registered with Route 53 (https://repost.aws/knowledge-center/route-53-verify-domain) and Why is my domain suspended with status ClientHold (https://repost.aws/knowledge-center/route-53-fix-client-hold-status) — a ClientHold domain becomes reachable again once verification completes, so the already-suspended one is recoverable.

When you register a domain with Route 53, ICANN requires email verification for the registrant contact. You typically have between 3 and 15 days to click the verification link (depending on the top-level domain) before the domain gets suspended.

If you're experiencing issues where you're receiving the verification emails but the links aren't working properly, and your domain is showing "reachability pending" status, this is a critical issue that needs immediate attention. When domains aren't verified within the required timeframe, they will be suspended and become unavailable on the internet.

Since you've already opened a support ticket that has been unassigned for 7 days and one of your domains has already been affected, I recommend the following urgent steps:

  1. Escalate your existing support ticket - Reply to your open ticket emphasizing the urgency and that you've already lost access to one domain and are at risk of losing another.

  2. Open a new support case if needed, specifically categorizing it as a critical issue affecting domain availability.

  3. Try resending the confirmation email through the Route 53 console to see if a fresh link resolves the issue.

  4. Contact AWS Support directly through phone support if you have a support plan that includes it, as this is time-sensitive.

Given that this appears to be a technical issue with the verification system itself (since you've tested across multiple browsers, devices, networks, and email addresses), AWS Support will need to investigate and potentially manually verify your domain registration to prevent suspension of your remaining domains.

  • I am a solo dev that cannot afford a better support plan. Escalation and phone support are not available options, as the free plan only allows "general". The confirmation email has been resent multiple times to multiple emails and I have recieved them each time, but the link has always been broken
