Unable to turn on backups on the RDS instance.

The following error occurred while turning on backups on a RDS instance. "We're sorry, your request to modify the instance XXXmysqlrdsXXXX has failed. Backup retention cannot be set to non-zero while there are instances doing a point in time restore from DB Instance XXXmysqlrdsXXXX. Please try after they are complete." No instances were restored from the DB instance that time and also 'create read replica' option is disabled for that instance.

Hi Guru,

May I ask what is the version of RDS MySQL are you using?

"Create Read Replica" is disabled as you are currently having backup retention period as 0. For read replicas to work we need to have non-zero backup retention period. Please refer to the below link[1].

Did you try changing the backup retention any other time? If yes then did you get the same error message again?

If yes, then I would recommend create a Technical Support case for AWS Support[2] so that we could look into the details on this issue.

  • Hi Raunak, MySQL version of the RDS instance is 5.7.44. I am still unable to turn on backups on the RDS instance which is required to create Blue/Green deployment and also creating a RDS instance using restore snapshot method(using snapshots taken after 29th February) fails every time .The following message has been received from AWS. "Your Amazon RDS DB instance 'yyyy-mysqlrds14' in the US-WEST-2 Region is unable to create successfully due to a defect in the MySQL community edition: https://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=91977. Several of your instances have been unable to create due to this issue. We recommend to that you restore from a snapshot from a different point in time.". The recommendation method is also not working. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi Guru,

I am afraid that without looking into the details of your instance and error message that you receiving, we will not able to help further on this. Unfortunately its not a generic error message and we need to drill down deep in this.

Do you have any AWS Support plan with us?
