Purchased RDS reserved instances as instructed by cost explorer, daily spend increased 14 times.

As per my title, AWS Cost explorer suggested to purchase 5 r6g reserved instances with no upfront to reduce our monthly costs by about $156 USD.

Was spending about $32 USD daily and this morning after purchase I woke up to a $450 USD spend on RDS Services so far. Is this a one time charge because of our RDS purchase or is this the new daily??

I raised a support ticket already to look into this but I am scared if this is the new daily, we woill go broke in a few days...

If you go to Cost Explorer, select RDS under Service and Reserved under Purchase Option as the filter, then group by Charge Type. You'll see the amount that shows as Recurring reservation fee. That's the amount you are paying for the RI. You could also change Aggregate cost by (under Advanced options) to Amortized which will spread the recurring fee evenly into days instead of showing a lump sum on the specific day when the RI was purchased.

  • Thanks! Just did that and now after several days, I see that was exactly what happened, a lump sum charge and now the amortized daily cost has gone down.
