RDS Performance Insights to CloudWatch Database Insights Migration

-Are there any features in RDS Performance Insights that aren't available in CloudWatch Database Insights?:

Answer : In addition to the features provided by Performance Insights (PIs), CloudWatch Database Insights (DBI) offers an expanded set of capabilities compared to PI, including fleet-level monitoring, integration with application performance monitoring, lock analysis, and more. Additionally, by leveraging the CloudWatch ecosystem, DBI has the potential to offer advanced features such as anomaly detection. CloudWatch Database Insights offers two operating modes:

1. Standard Mode (Default):
   • 7-day metric retention
   • Basic DB load analysis capabilities
   • Basic monitoring features
2. Advanced Mode:
   • 15-month metric retention (equivalent to Performance Insights paid tier)
   • Enhanced monitoring capabilities
   • Operating system process analysis
   • Fleet-wide monitoring views
   • SQL analysis tools
   • Integration with CloudWatch Application Signals

These enhanced features help customers substantially reduce their mean time to diagnose database performance issues. CW DBI includes all the goodness in PI as well as it has observability from all other AWS services making it easy to correlate findings across your entire stack within your app ecosystem.
The only minor difference is that the Execution Plan Capture feature for RDS for Oracle and RDS for SQL Server (currently available in the Performance Insights free tier) will transition to the Advanced mode of CloudWatch Database Insights.

-We're considering enabling Database Insights Advanced. What are the cost implications compared to RDS Performance Insights?

Answer : It is important to note that there is price difference between the PI paid tier and the DBI Advanced mode offering.

*RDS Performance Insights Paid Tier: -Base cost: $1.50 per vCPU per month for first month of retention -Additional months: $0.0631 per vCPU per month for each additional month -Example (for 2 vCPUs with 15-month retention): --First month: 2 vCPUs × $1.50 = $3.00 --Additional 14 months: 2 vCPUs × 14 × $0.0631 = $1.76 -Total: $4.76 USD per month.

*CloudWatch Database Insights Advanced Mode: -Priced at $0.0125 per vCPU-hour for provisioned instances -For Aurora Serverless v2: $0.003125 per ACU-hour -For an instance with 2 vCPUs: approximately $18.25 per month (2 vCPUs × 0.0125 USD × 730 hours) -15-month metric retention included

If you have subscribed to the Database Insights Advanced mode, you do not need to pay for Performance Insights separately. The cost of Performance Insights is included in the pricing for the Database Insights Advanced tier.
