How do you handle AWS cost reviews at Series A/B startups without a dedicated FinOps team?

1

We're a small engineering team and AWS costs have been growing month over month. We don't have a dedicated FinOps person — cost reviews happen manually and inconsistently. Curious how other startups handle this. Specifically:

Do you have a regular audit process or is it ad hoc? How do you identify idle resources like stopped EC2, unattached EBS, unused Elastic IPs? How do you handle data transfer costs — they seem to sneak up on us Do you use AWS Cost Explorer / Trusted Advisor or something else?

For context — I've been building an automated audit & remediation tool that scans 7 resource types across multiple accounts, identifies waste, and fixes it automatically — with dry-run mode and read-only IAM for safety. Happy to share what I've learned if useful to anyone here.

For startups without a dedicated FinOps team, establishing a structured approach to cost monitoring is essential. Here's how you can handle AWS cost reviews effectively:

Regular Audit Process: Rather than ad hoc reviews, set up a regular cycle to discuss and analyze your cloud efficiency. Create a daily or frequent routine using AWS Cost Explorer to proactively analyze costs at the account-level, workload-level, or specific service-level. Configure AWS Budgets on all accounts with budget limits for overall spend and specific workloads using tags. This creates accountability and ensures cost reviews happen consistently, even without dedicated personnel.

Automated Monitoring and Alerts: AWS Cost Anomaly Detection uses machine learning to identify anomalous spend and root causes automatically, allowing you to take quick action. Configure cost monitors for the spend segments you want to evaluate (individual services, accounts, or tags) and set up alert subscriptions with cost impact thresholds. You can receive notifications as individual alerts, daily summaries, or weekly summaries sent to relevant team members.

Scheduled Reporting: AWS Billing and Cost Management Dashboards now offers scheduled email delivery, which automates the entire reporting workflow. You can schedule comprehensive cost reports showing spending trends, service breakdowns, and utilization metrics to be delivered directly to stakeholders' inboxes without manual effort. This is particularly valuable for small teams where engineers don't want to spend time generating reports repeatedly.

Visualization and Analysis: Use AWS Cost Explorer's interface to visualize and manage costs over time with hourly and resource-level granularity. You can also integrate your Cost and Usage Report data with Amazon QuickSight dashboards for more customized reporting. The Cost Intelligence Dashboard is a customizable solution that can help create the foundation of your cost management tool.

Creating Cost Awareness: Grant different levels of visibility based on roles - engineering teams can see costs for resources they're using, while leadership gets environment-level billing access. This creates a cost-aware culture where everyone understands their impact on spend.

Additional Tools: AWS Trusted Advisor provides guidance on cost optimization opportunities. Combined with Cost Explorer and Budgets, these native AWS tools can handle most startup needs without requiring dedicated FinOps personnel or third-party solutions initially.

The key is making cost monitoring proactive rather than reactive, automating what you can, and establishing regular review cycles that fit into your existing engineering workflows.
