Route 53 domain registration blocked - support escalation unanswered for two weeks

0

I created a new set of accounts for the Adrian Cantrill exam prep course. Many of the lessons work best if you've got your own domain registered and hosted in Route 53. I've done this many times with other accounts without issue.

My attempt this time was blocked for unclear reasons 4-5 weeks ago. I opened a support case and got an ultimate response saying I hadn't used the account enough and that despite the support person's advocacy, it would remain blocked. I used the account for another two weeks and then tried again. It was blocked similarly. This time I opened a case, noting that I have many other accounts (with a management account ID for an organization that I shared) where I spend $500-600 a month and was long-lived enough to have received ACH payment terms.

This second case received exactly the same text sequence responses. The final one contained a word-for-word repeat of the first one even though I had provided substantively different information. It claimed to be sent from the same individual. It all the marks of an automated solution claiming to be a human.

So, I sent a fresh case noting the case numbers of the first two and asked that they not automate their response in this questionable manner and actually investigate. It's now been two weeks with no response.

I'm 70% of the way through the first course with no ability to create my own domain (unless I do so outside of AWS, which I'd rather not do).

Anybody else have this experience? Any recommendations?

Hello,

I fully understand the frustration regarding Route 53. I've shared your concerns internally with our Support team on your behalf.

I'd recommend continuing to communicate via your case as our Support team is equipped with the tools to best assist.

  • I appreciate your efforts.

I've been trying to do this through support in good faith for more than a month. Getting an obvious duplicate response chain from an automated system that purported to be from a human agent when I offered more information to help greatly reduced my confidence in the method.

I understand your frustration with the domain registration blocks and the support experience you've described. While I cannot address the specifics of your existing cases, I can provide some guidance on domain registration restrictions and next steps.

AWS may place restrictions on domain registration for new accounts as part of their fraud prevention and abuse mitigation measures. These restrictions can occur even if you have other established AWS accounts, as each account is evaluated independently based on its own usage patterns and history.

For your immediate situation, I recommend adding detailed correspondence to your open support case through the AWS Support Center at https://console.aws.amazon.com/support/. In your update, clearly explain your legitimate use case for the domain registration, reference your established relationship with AWS through your other accounts, and describe the specific course requirements you're trying to meet.

Regarding response times and support quality: If you're currently on the Basic Support plan, response times can vary significantly. You might want to review your AWS Support plan options, as higher-tier plans like Developer, Business, or Enterprise Support provide faster response times and more direct access to support engineers for account-related issues.

For your course work in the meantime, you have a couple of options: You could register a domain through an external registrar and then transfer DNS management to Route 53, which would allow you to complete most Route 53-related exercises. Alternatively, you could continue working through other course sections while waiting for resolution.

The key is to continue engaging through the official Support Center channel with clear, detailed information about your use case and business relationship with AWS.
