MIGRATION OF RHEL 6 SERVER ON-PREM to AWS CLOUD

0

We have a workload where we are migrating RHEL 6 servers from on-prem to AWS . RH will stop supporting RHEL 6 from June, 2024. can we migrate from RHEL 6 (on-prem) to RHEL 8 in AWS on the fly? OR will it be like to like i.e RHEL 6 to RHEL 6 and then we upgrade to RHEL 7 and then 8?

Hi,

I would strongly recommend to read this post to understand the recommended method for doing such migrations: https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/publicsector/how-migrate-on-premises-workloads-aws-application-migration-service/

As a general recommendation, it is always better to separate concerns:

  1. migrate from on-prem to AWS
  2. upgrade migrated systems to later version

It is better to upgrade after migration because when on cloud, it will be much simpler and re-risked to do the migration: you can snapshot the instance in its initial version and restore it as a new instance on which you can repeat the migration process as many times as needed to make it successful and matching your desired setup.

Best,

Didier
