Hi, Is there a way to know when ecs task is struck at provisioning state for more than 5 mins? Can we set a alert of some sort for this?

Yes, it is possible to monitor and set alerts for ECS tasks that are stuck in the PROVISIONING state for an extended period. Here are a few approaches you can consider:

  1. CloudWatch Metrics: Amazon ECS publishes metrics to CloudWatch. You can create a CloudWatch alarm based on the "PendingTaskCount" metric. Set the alarm to trigger if this metric remains above zero for more than 5 minutes.

  2. CloudWatch Events: You can set up a CloudWatch Event rule that triggers when a task transitions to the PROVISIONING state. Then, use a Lambda function to check if the task remains in this state for more than 5 minutes and send a notification if it does.

  3. Custom Monitoring Script: Develop a custom script that periodically checks the status of your ECS tasks using the AWS CLI or SDK. If a task is found to be in the PROVISIONING state for more than 5 minutes, the script can send an alert via SNS or another notification service.

  4. Third-party Monitoring Tools: Many third-party monitoring solutions integrate with AWS and can provide alerts for ECS task states, including tasks stuck in PROVISIONING.

  5. ECS Events: ECS publishes events to EventBridge (formerly CloudWatch Events) when task states change. You can create a rule to capture these events and set up notifications for tasks that remain in the PROVISIONING state for too long.

When setting up these alerts, consider investigating the root causes of tasks getting stuck in the PROVISIONING state. Common reasons include insufficient cluster resources, networking issues, or problems with the task definition. Regularly checking ECS service events, verifying task definitions, and ensuring proper IAM permissions can help prevent these issues.

Remember to tune your alert thresholds based on your specific use case, as some tasks may legitimately take longer to provision depending on their complexity and resource requirements.
