How does one use pod identity with AWS CLI?

I've setup pod identity per the docs. I'm running the latest AWS CLI version, but I get this.

Unsupported host 'x.x.x.23'. Can only retrieve metadata from these hosts: x.x.x.2, localhost, 127.0.0.1
