Amazon Aurora for PostgreSQL 1.X (compatible with PostgreSQL 9.6.XX) will reach end of life on January 31, 2022. We are giving you a 12 month notice to give enough time to upgrade your impacted database cluster(s). We recommend that you proactively upgrade your databases running Amazon Aurora for PostgreSQL major version 9.6 to Amazon Aurora for PostgreSQL 10 or higher at your convenience before January 31, 2022. We will send you updates and reminders throughout the year prior to the Aurora PostgreSQL version end of life deadline.
If you do not upgrade your database before January 31, 2022, Amazon Aurora will upgrade your Amazon Aurora for PostgreSQL 9.6 databases to the appropriate Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL major version during a scheduled maintenance window after January 31, 2022. On February 15, 2022, any Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL 9.6 databases that remain will be upgraded to an appropriate major version regardless of whether the instances are in a maintenance window or not.
You can initiate an upgrade of your database instance — either immediately or during your next maintenance window — to a newer major version of Amazon Aurora for PostgreSQL using the AWS Management Console or the AWS Command Line Interface (CLI). The upgrade process will shut down the database instance, perform the upgrade, and restart the database instance. The database instance may be restarted multiple times during the upgrade process. While major version upgrades typically complete within the standard maintenance window, the duration of the upgrade depends on the number of objects within the database. To avoid any unplanned unavailability outside your maintenance window, we recommend that you first take a snapshot [1] or a fast database clone [2] of your database and test the upgrade to get an estimate of the duration. To learn more about upgrading PostgreSQL major versions in Aurora, review the Upgrading Database Versions page [3].
We want to make you aware of the following additional milestones associated with upgrading these databases that are reaching end of life.
• Now through January 31, 2022 - You can initiate upgrades of Amazon Aurora for PostgreSQL 9.6 instances to Amazon Aurora for PostgreSQL 10 or higher at any time.
• Starting August 19, 2021 - After this date, you cannot create new Aurora cluster or instances with PostgreSQL major version 9.6 from either the AWS Console or the CLI. You can still add read replicas to existing Aurora PostgreSQL 9.6 clusters and continue to apply changes to existing Aurora PostgreSQL 9.6 instances, such as migrating to a Graviton2 R6g instance or changing instance configuration, until January 31, 2022.
• Starting January 31, 2022 - Aurora will also automatically upgrade Amazon Aurora for PostgreSQL 9.6 instances to a current version of Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL within the earliest scheduled maintenance window that follows. Restoration of Amazon Aurora for PostgreSQL 9.6 database snapshots will result in an automatic upgrade of the restored database to a supported version at the time.
• Starting February 15, 2022 – Aurora will automatically upgrade any remaining Amazon Aurora for PostgreSQL 9.6 instances to the appropriate Aurora PostgreSQL major version whether or not they are in a maintenance window.
