RI upgrade query

Hello - We current have an RDS reserved instance (RI) for db.t2.large that is good through November 2025. We also have a db.t2.large instance running that needs to be migrated. The notification we received informed me that the instance and the RI will both be upgraded together sometime after September 1. This is not good timing for us. I'm willing to upgrade the instance to db.t3.large manually however, I would also then need the RI updated to match once I've completed the migration. Can this be done?

The issue is the db.t2.large needs to be transitioned to db.t3.large together with the db.t2.large RI, I'd like to do that EARLIER than September, not later. So, I want to know BEFORE I make the change to the database instance whether the RI can be updated early too. Otherwise we'll be paying the on demand price.

If you'll do this manually by yourself - the RI will not be changed automatically to match your new instance type. If you want to do it before that time, I'd suggest to open a support case and ask if they can help to change to a new RI earlier - https://docs.aws.amazon.com/awssupport/latest/user/case-management.html - choose Billing support, and find RI category.

There might still be some time where you'll pay on-demand for the new instance during the transition, but maybe support can provide some options how to minimize that.
