AWS ECS App mesh upgrade to Service connect rollback plan

Based on the end of support notice, AWS App Mesh will be discontinued on September 30, 2026. After this date, you will no longer be able to access the AWS App Mesh console or AWS App Mesh resources. This means that rolling back to App Mesh after the sunset date would not be a viable option.

For your migration from App Mesh to ECS Service Connect, here are recommended rollback considerations:

Before September 30, 2026: You can still roll back to App Mesh if issues arise during your Service Connect deployment. This gives you a safety net during your migration window.

Recommended Rollback Strategy: Since App Mesh won't be available post-sunset, your rollback plan should focus on Service Connect itself rather than reverting to App Mesh. Consider these approaches:

1. Blue-Green Deployment Pattern: Maintain parallel environments where you can quickly switch traffic between your App Mesh setup and Service Connect setup. This allows you to validate Service Connect thoroughly before fully committing.

2. Gradual Traffic Shifting: Implement a phased migration where you gradually shift traffic from App Mesh to Service Connect. This allows you to monitor performance and quickly reduce traffic to Service Connect if issues arise, without a full rollback.

3. Service Connect Rollback Capabilities: ECS now supports rolling back service deployments to previous stable states. If a Service Connect deployment fails, you can use automated failure detection with deployment circuit breakers and CloudWatch Alarms, or manually trigger rollbacks to return to the last known good Service Connect configuration.

The key is to complete your migration and thoroughly validate Service Connect well before the September 2026 deadline, ensuring your rollback strategy focuses on Service Connect version management rather than reverting to the deprecated App Mesh service.
