Assuming you are refering to the S3 File Gateway: The cache disk within an Amazon Storage Gateway is used to optimize up- and download of data. Therefore, the data is kept in the cache until Storage Gateway replaces it with more frequently accessed data. This optimizes the data being transferred between your Storage Gateway Location and Amazon S3.
