Volume is instance/AMI locked and backup snapshots cannot be used on other instances

0

I have an EC2 instance that creates backup snapshots of attached volumes via lifecycle policy. We have discovered that the backup snapshots are useless as they are instance/AMI locked. When I create new volumes from the snapshot, and attach them to other instances, I receive the following error:

The Instance configuration for this AWS Marketplace product is not supported. Please see the AWS Marketplace site for more information about supported instance types, regions, and operating systems.

The volume / snapshot is a NON-OS DISK.

All Instances, volumes, and snapshots are within US-East1c

How can I get this volume unlocked so future snapshots of the volume can be restored on new instances (and actually used as a backup)?

Thanks!

Dear User,

Thanks for posting a query on re:post.

We would like to check with you on below 2 points :

Ensure that the values for architecture type and virtualisation type parameters are same for both the source instance type and new AMI (being created from snapshot).

Let us know if the issue still persists even after this check.

Wow, this is amazing. The volume is from an m5 instance and cannot be attached to m6i instances. But it CAN be attached to other m5 instances.

Okay, so we were hoping to migrate all m5 instances to m6. However, instance type cannot be changed if an old m5 AMI locked is attached. How can I get these volumes to accept new m6 instances?
