Costs of OpenVPN Access Server

0

Hi I have started a OpenVPN Access Server and selected the **t2.micro - Free tier eligible **option. My question is will I be charged by the hour as long as this Instance is running? That means will I be charged for the Launch time or is it free up to 2 users? I see that if I stop the instance, then I will get a new Public IPv4 address.

Hi There,

I understand you are asking about "Costs of OpenVPN Access Server " and If you will be charged by the hour as long as the **t2.micro - Free tier eligible **option Instance is running.

I would advise that you create and associate an Elastic IP address to your intance so that you can remap the same IP address to another instance when necessary.

For AWS Marketplace products, there are two billing factors to consider. The first is the cost of the underlying infrastructure (the EC2 instance itself, EBS) which generates a charge for any hours that the instance is in a running state. The second charge is specifically associated with the software of the Marketplace product, essentially representing the licensing fee for that software and billed per/hour for the same hours that the instance is running

I can see that the Marketplace product in question provides free software charges and only charge for the infrastructure as long as the instance is running, OpenVPN Access Server (HVM) includes 750 hours of t2.micro instance if the account qualifies for AWS Free Tier Promotion and here there are no charges for the usage of software and I believe if you stop the instance there would not be charges that accumulate from that point.

Here is the product page for your reference: https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/prodview-y3m73u6jd5srk#pdp-usage

You can review the AWS Free Usage Tier FAQs, along with the Free Tier details using the links below: - http://aws.amazon.com/free/faqs/https://aws.amazon.com/free/?all-free-tier.sort-by=item.additionalFields.SortRank&all-free-tier.sort-order=asc

For more information about the Free Tier offer, along with the rest of the EC2 pricing, see the pricing page here: https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/pricing/

The bill includes a calculation of the hourly fee for the software multiplied by the number of hours any Amazon Machine Image (AMI) instance with this software runs. You also receive a bill for usage of AWS infrastructure services such as Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS), and bandwidth.

To avoid any unexpected charge and if no longer needed, you can cancel the subscription by following these instructions:

  1. Find the software subscription under your list of active subscriptions and click “Manage”: https://console.aws.amazon.com/marketplace/home/subscriptions
  2. On the following page, click “Actions” in the top right-hand corner
  3. Click “Cancel subscription”
  4. A pop-up will ask you to confirm you would like to cancel the subscription. Click "Yes”.

I hope the information provided is helpful,

Hello,

It is a best practice to associate an Elastic IP address so that you can remap the same address to another instance in case the current instance fails. So an Elastic IP address is a static public IPv4 address associated with your AWS account in a specific Region. Unlike an auto-assigned public IP address, an Elastic IP address is preserved after you stop and start your instance in a virtual private cloud (VPC).

Regarding your question on pricing:

The below link will give you a breakdown of the total hourly or annual cost.

  • The OpenVPN Access Server (5 Connected Devices) version includes a 7-day free trial to let you try this solution without incurring software charges.

  • After the free trial expires, it automatically converts to a paid hourly subscription on your AWS bill. Other options support a larger number of devices, including those billed by the hour or by annual subscription. You can also choose to bring your own license (BYOL).

  • AWS Marketplace does not charge for BYOL software. These products are put here for the convenience of customers who have already purchased license for the software via a channel other than AWS Marketplace.

  • Note that for BYOL software, you are still responsible for AWS infrastructure fees which is the cost of the underlying EC2 instance as well as any necessary auxiliary EC2 resources such as EBS storage.

Hope this helps.
