Can I change my commitment amount when renewing an AWS Compute Savings Plan

0

I have a Compute Savings Plan that is approaching its expiration date, and I want to renew it. However, our infrastructure needs have changed, so I need to change our hourly commitment amount for the next term.

My questions are:

  • Can I change the hourly commitment directly during the renewal process, or do I need to let the current plan expire and manually buy a brand-new one?

  • If I use the "Renew" function in the AWS console, does it allow me to edit the commitment amount and payment options (e.g., changing from No Upfront to Partial Upfront) before queuing the new plan?

Yes, you can change your commitment amount when renewing your AWS Compute Savings Plan. When you use the renewal function in the AWS console, you have the flexibility to adjust the commitment amount based on your changing usage needs or current Savings Plans rates.

To renew your Savings Plan, you would navigate to the Billing and Cost Management console, go to the Savings Plans Inventory section, select your active Savings Plan, and choose the "Renew Savings Plan" option. This queues a new Savings Plan to start immediately after your current one expires (one second after expiration).

While renewing with the same configuration will maintain the same fees at the current Savings Plan rate, you're not locked into the original commitment amount. You can modify the commitment amount depending on your usage requirements. This means you can increase or decrease your hourly commitment to better align with your infrastructure changes.

Regarding payment options, you can also adjust these when setting up your renewal. The available payment options include All Upfront, Partial Upfront, and No Upfront, so you can change from your current payment structure (such as moving from No Upfront to Partial Upfront) when configuring the new plan.

The renewal process is designed to be seamless - the new Savings Plan will automatically begin as soon as your current plan expires, ensuring continuous coverage without any gap in your commitment discount.

Hello Kunal,

Yes you can change your hourly commitment during the renewal. Savings plan are an excellent way of keeping costs low. You can also change the payment collection process, allowing you to choose all up front, partial, or none.
