🔴 Unwanted service OpenSearch / Cost ?

0

Hi to all, we just started our AWS adventure, opening a free (?) account for testing Amazon Bedrock and the AI models.

Today we noticed that the "Cost and Billing Management" section shows a forecast of the estimated expense for the current period (see image). To our amazement we see this item "OpenSearch Service" for a cost of $40.54 ! 😱

Inserisci qui la descrizione dell'immagine

Since we DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT this service is, we ask, how can it be deactivated ? Is this a mandatory thing to use any AWS service ?

We only want to use Bedrock ... but if this is the premise, we should say goodbye to the whole platform with these absurd and above all NOT REQUIRED costs 😡

🙏🏻 Please someone clarify this for us and tell us how to deactivate it. Thank you so much!

Alex

Hello.

Amazon OpenSearch Service is a service used for analysis etc.

It is unclear how you are using Amazon Bedrock, but it is possible that the OpenSearch Service was started when you configured Knowledge Bases or something similar.

If you do not need OpenSearch Service, you can delete it by following the steps in the document below.

  • Dear Riku, Thank you very much for your complete, immediate and accurate answer. You helped us a lot !

You guessed correctly, indeed, it was our attempt to use "Knowledge Bases" with AI models, which triggered this service.

We have now eliminated it so there should be no additional unexpected and unintended costs.

However, we think there should be more clarity and transparency from Amazon, we cannot all be "administrative engineers" just to figure out what will be charged or not.

Thank you again, best regards Alex

  • When you created the Knowledge Base and selected the Vector Database, it specifically mentions "Let Amazon create a vector store on your behalf or select a previously created store to allow Bedrock to store, update and manage embeddings. You will be billed directly from the vector store provider." When selecting quick create, it mentions it will create an OpenSearch Serverless vector store. If you click through the menus too quickly without reading all of the messages, these facts may be missed.

Hi,

What does that means "is possible that the OpenSearch Service was started when you configured Knowledge Bases or something similar"

We also have bedrock using OpenSearch Serverless as Knowledge Base, however during the weekend without any usage, i can see some billing as reported by Alex.

How can i avoid this cost ?

Thanks Marcus

After summit in Amsterdam i learned that so far OpenSearch Serverless in kind of PaaS with minimum cost. So for who that are encounter at the same problem, consider to automate the E2E process of Bedrock + Opensearch and destroy this stack via IaC once you are done with tests.
