When will OpenSearch Serverless update to use version 3+?

0

I want to migrate to the Serverless version of OpenSearch but need the features of version three.

When will OpenSearch Serverless update to use version 3? Or where can I find the serverless upgrade timelines for OpenSearch?

Any answers or resources to more info would be appreciated.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting AWS Premium Support. I appreciate you reaching out with your questions about OpenSearch Serverless and version 3 support. Based on my analysis, I can provide you with some clarity on your migration concerns.

Currently, there is no publicly announced timeline for when Amazon OpenSearch Serverless will support OpenSearch version 3 or higher. I understand this may be frustrating given your need for version 3 features, but I want to be transparent about what we know and what options are available to you.

To address your specific questions:

Regarding the upgrade timeline for OpenSearch Serverless to version 3, AWS has not yet published a roadmap or estimated date for this upgrade. While Amazon OpenSearch Service (the standard, non-serverless offering) does support OpenSearch version 3.1 as of September 2025, the Serverless variant operates on a different release schedule and currently does not have version 3 available.

The reason for this difference is that OpenSearch Serverless is a fully managed, auto-scaling service that abstracts away infrastructure management, which means AWS must thoroughly test and validate new versions before making them available. This typically takes additional time compared to the standard OpenSearch Service.

To help you move forward, here are the steps I recommend:

First, I suggest reviewing the specific features you need from OpenSearch version 3 to determine if they're critical for your use case. Some features may already be available in earlier versions supported by Serverless.

Second, I recommend checking the AWS OpenSearch Service resources page regularly for announcements, as AWS typically announces major version support updates there first.

  3. OpenSearch Project Official Website: https://opensearch.org/

Please feel free to reach out if you have any additional questions or if you'd like to discuss your specific migration scenario in more detail. We're here to help you find the best solution for your needs.

Thank you and have a great day!!

Based on the available information, there is no announced timeline for when Amazon OpenSearch Serverless will support OpenSearch version 3+. The sources don't specifically mention any planned upgrade path or timeline for OpenSearch Serverless to version 3.

The most recent information shows that Amazon OpenSearch Service (the non-serverless version) supports OpenSearch version 3.1 as of September 9, 2025, but there's no equivalent announcement for the Serverless offering.

Recent updates for OpenSearch Serverless include support for Point in Time (PIT) and SQL search in AWS GovCloud Regions, availability in new regions like Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) and Asia Pacific (Osaka), and support for disk-based vector search, but none of these updates mention version 3 support.

If you need the features of OpenSearch version 3, you might need to use the standard Amazon OpenSearch Service rather than the Serverless option for now. I would recommend checking the AWS OpenSearch Service resources page periodically for announcements or contacting AWS Support directly for more specific information about the OpenSearch Serverless roadmap.
