Instance Type Upgrade Fails with AMI Marketplace Debian - The instance configuration for this AWS Marketplace product is not supported

0

Official e.g. Debian Marketplace AMIs are bound to certain instance types which may make sense with regard to architecture. Problem is that newer instance types e.g. M6i or M7i are not know to older AMIs e.g. Debian 10 or Debian 9. Hence it's not possible to change to a newer instance type of the same architecture. The only workaround I found is to copy the whole hard disk which is not an option in production.

The instance configuration for this AWS Marketplace product is not supported. Please see the AWS Marketplace site for more information about supported instance types, regions, and operating systems.

Does somebody have a solution to this? It would be good if newer instance types of the same family will get automatically added to older AMIs - at least the free Marketplace AMIs of official sources.

That's the AMI that I use (Debian 9): amd64 55q52qvgjfpdj2fpfy9mb1lo4 It's even no longer available newly.

Hello.

While it may be convenient to have new instance types automatically added, it also means that they can be added even if they are not guaranteed to work.
Even if it is a successor instance type, there is a possibility that the OS will not start if the CPU processor is different.
In other words, even if you can select a new instance type, there is a possibility that the OS will not start, so I think the current style is best, where the Marketplace product provider performs proper operation verification before adding it.
