What happens to Amazon Linux EC2 instances when support expires Dec. 31, 2023?

Question

We have an old EC2 instance running Amazon Linux. We're working on a migration plan to Cognito that will make this server obsolete, but it won't be ready until early Q1 2024. What happens to existing EC2 instances running Amazon Linux when the support finally expires on Dec. 31, 2023?

I logged a ticket asking this question with AWS support 2 days ago - no response.

Hello.

Even if maintenance support ends, running EC2 will not be affected.  
However, this is not a very good security situation as you will not be able to update packages.  
We recommend migrating to Amazon Linux 2023 etc. as soon as possible.
