How do I use Trusted Advisor?

I want to use the AWS Trusted Advisor service, but I don’t know how to start.

Short description

AWS Trusted Advisor provides a set of best practice checks and recommendations to help you reduce costs, increase availability and performance, and improve security. To provide these recommendations, Trusted Advisor inspects your resources across all AWS Regions and presents a summary of results, expressed as an icon:

  • No problems detected: check mark in a green circle
  • Investigation recommended: exclamation mark in a yellow triangle
  • Action recommended: cross mark in a red circle

Resolution

Explore the Trusted Advisor console

Open the Trusted Advisor console to view the check results across the following six categories in the Trusted Advisor Dashboard:

  • Cost optimization
  • Performance
  • Security
  • Fault tolerance
  • Service limits
  • Operational excellence

Potential monthly savings is the total amount that you can save each month if you act on all recommendations across all checks in the pillars.

The What's New section shows information on latest checks, new features, and updates to the existing checks across different categories.

The Recent Changes section shows the status changes from recent checks.

If you have a Developer Support plan or Basic Support plan, then you can access all Service limits checks through the console. You can also review six Security checks through the console.

If you have a Business or Enterprise Support plan, then you can access every Trusted Advisor check with AWS Support API and AWS Trusted Advisor:

  • Use the AWS Support API to pull the check results into your own tools for analysis and tracking purposes.
  • Use Amazon CloudWatch to set an alarm to notify you based on Trusted Advisor metrics. Use Amazon CloudWatch Events to detect and react to the changes in the Trusted Advisor checks.

Review your Trusted Advisor recommendations

To see all the related checks, choose a category in the navigation pane. For example, choose Cost optimization to see all the cost optimization checks. Then, choose the Expand/Collapse icon next to your check to see more details.

Or, you can choose the Download icon to download a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet with the same level of detail. This Microsoft Excel spreadsheet has a tab for each check with check-level metadata.

Set your preferences for resource analysis and email notifications

To prevent Trusted Advisor from accessing your resources and performing the checks, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the Trusted Advisor console.
  2. From the navigation pane, choose Preferences.
  3. Choose Disable Trusted Advisor.

To turn on weekly email notifications from Trusted Advisor, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the Trusted Advisor console.
  2. From the navigation pane, choose Preferences.
  3. For Recipients, select the appropriate option.
  4. For Notification Language, choose a language.
  5. Choose Save Email Preferences.
