Managing Swap on Mac Instance

Reading the Considerations section of the EC2 Mac Instances guide, I found the following:

AWS does not manage or support the internal SSD on the Apple hardware. We strongly recommend that you use Amazon EBS volumes instead. EBS volumes provide the same elasticity, availability, and durability benefits on Mac instances as they do on any other EC2 instance.

Assuming an EBS root volume of one of the suggested types in the article above, where does the VM swap live? On the EBS volume? It sounds almost as though the internal SSD is an option but not recommended, however once a machine starts using swap, it's slow enough with local storage, so swap over a network volume would be significantly less than ideal.

What's the general wisdom here? Where can I find more information on this topic, since my searches have been less than fruitful.
