Amazon Q - Is there a technical advantage to upload a file in the web prompt, va having the content in the prompt

I am wondering if there are any technical advantage to have the files uploaded through the attachment API when questioning ? Are both the prompt and the attached files going to Kendra or only the attached files ?

I am wondering if the results would be different in the case where the user input would be a text small enough (500 words) that would be part of the question instead of provided as an attachment ?

Hello ,

I understand that you wish to know for any technical advantage to have the files uploaded through the attachment API when questioning or via the prompt in Amazon Q .

Regarding this , I would like to inform you that there can be 4 scenarios explaining this use case . Please find them below :

Scenario 1 : we do not ingest the document through data source or any attachment —> In this case , it will not show any result of the question you ask

Scenario 2 : we do not ingest the document through data source or any attachment but data is given in prompt —> In this case also , it will not show any result of the question you ask

Scenario 3 : we do not ingest the document through data source but attachment is added —> In this case , it will show the result of the question you ask

Scenario 4 : we ingest the document through data source not via attachment —> In this case also , it will show the result of the question you ask

Further as per our official documentation: Amazon Q generates a response to your question with a sources section that links to its references. Hence in order to get a response you should either upload the documentation or ingest data via data source as Amazon Q always gives response based on the ingested data .

[+] Chat with Amazon Q on AWS apps and websites : https://docs.aws.amazon.com/amazonq/latest/aws-builder-use-ug/chat-with-q.html

Having said that if you are facing issues / error with any particular use case then please feel free to reach out to us via a support case with AWS using the following link:
